You know that feeling when you buy chicken from the market and it just doesn’t hit the same way it used to? That’s exactly what got me thinking.
I kept hearing my parents talk about how chicken “used to taste different back in the day.” How the birds were healthier, the eggs had deeper yellow yolks, and the meat actually had flavor. That’s when I realized – we don’t have to accept mediocre. We can bring back quality.
That’s why I’m starting Oorvex Poultry Farm, and I’m focusing on improved kenyeji chickens.
What exactly are improved kenyeji chickens?
Great question. Traditional kenyeji are amazing – tough, disease-resistant, great taste. But improved kenyeji take it up a notch. These are selectively bred indigenous chickens that maintain all the benefits of traditional kenyeji but with better production rates.
Think of it like this:
- Traditional kenyeji: 80-120 eggs per year
- Improved kenyeji: 150-220 eggs per year
- They grow slightly faster but still have that authentic kenyeji taste
- Still way more disease-resistant than broilers
- Better feed conversion rates
It’s the best of both worlds. You get the authentic taste and hardiness people want, with productivity that makes business sense.
My vision for Oorvex
I’m not trying to become the biggest farm in Kenya. I’m trying to become the most trusted.
Within the next few years, my goal is simple: supply quality improved kenyeji meat and eggs to families and businesses that refuse to compromise on quality.
I want to be the farm where people know exactly what they’re getting:
- Birds raised with proper nutrition, not shortcuts
- Eggs from healthy, free-range hens
- Meat that actually tastes like chicken should taste
- Transparency in everything we do
Why improved kenyeji makes business sense
Let me be honest about the numbers because nobody talks about this enough.
Market Reality:
- Premium buyers pay 1,000-1,800 KES per mature improved kenyeji bird
- Eggs sell for 15-25 KES each (sometimes more for organic/free-range)
- Growing demand for quality over quantity
- Hotels, restaurants, and health-conscious families are actively looking for reliable suppliers
Production advantage:
- Better egg production than traditional kenyeji
- Still disease-resistant (lower vet costs)
- Good feed conversion rates
- Dual-purpose: meat AND eggs
- Longer laying period
I’m not promising overnight millions. But done right, this is a solid, sustainable business.
Where I am right now
Full transparency – I’m at the very beginning. I’m about to order 100 improved kenyeji chicks. My brooder is ready. I’ve been researching for months, talking to experienced farmers, getting my systems in place.
This isn’t a hobby for me. This is a business I’m building to last.
I’ve made a decision to document everything – the wins, the losses, the stupid mistakes, the unexpected challenges. If you’re thinking about poultry farming, especially improved kenyeji, maybe my journey will help you avoid some of the potholes.
What makes Oorvex different?
I’m not going to promise I’m reinventing farming. But here’s what I’m committing to:
Quality over quantity: I’d rather have 100 healthy birds than 500 struggling ones.
Proper nutrition: No shortcuts on feed. Good food in = good products out.
Transparency: I’ll share what I’m learning, including when things don’t go as planned.
Community focus: I’m building this to supply my community with quality protein they can trust.
Sustainable practices: Free-range where possible, proper waste management, ethical treatment.
The improved kenyeji opportunity
Here’s what I find exciting – there’s a huge gap in the market right now.
On one side, you have industrial broiler operations pumping out cheap, tasteless chicken. On the other side, you have traditional kenyeji that takes forever to mature and produces inconsistently.
Improved kenyeji sits perfectly in the middle. Better production than traditional, better taste than broilers, premium prices, growing demand.
The market is ready. The question is, who’s going to supply it with quality? That’s what Oorvex is about.
What’s next?
In the coming weeks:
- My first 100 improved kenyeji chicks arrive
- I start putting theory into practice
- I document everything – the good, bad, and ugly
- I build the foundation for something bigger
I’m building Oorvex to become a trusted name in improved kenyeji poultry. It starts with 100 chicks. Where it ends, we’ll see.
If you care about quality food, if you’re interested in poultry farming, or if you just want to follow along on this journey, stick around. Comment, ask questions, share your thoughts.
This is day one. Let’s build something real.
